Monaragala is the 2nd largest district in Sri Lanka. Its area is 5630 sqkm. There are approximately 106997 families living in the district. There are 1198 villages. Total population is 396173 out which 56944 are low income families.
In the past this area was known as Uva Wellassa. It had a unique irrigation system and a very rich cultural heritage. Most of this was destroyed in 1988 by foreign invaders.
After Sri Lanka regained its independence in 1948, the following areas of the district namely Kotiyagala, Athimale,, Okkampitiya, Handapangoda, Udaganawa, Buttala, Hulandawama were made into agricultural colonies by the then government
After a careful and detailed study by Terre des Hommes has supported to open the resource center at Liyangolla in April 2006.
