The overall objective of SFFL is to improve the social and economic
living conditions of all the coastal and inland fisher communities
of Sri Lanka. SFFL aims to harness the full potential of the
small-scale fisher population – specially the women, youngsters and
children - by providing care and education and introducing new fields of subsidiary
occupations and self-reliance activities in order to improve their
standard of living socially and economically.
In order to achieve the overall objective the SFFL works from
grass-root level up, using a federal structure of village-based
organisations. By organising the fisher community in village
organisations it empowers them to tackle together the different
challenges they face. The members are the decision-makers so
they “own” all the decisions and are committed to making the
programme succeed.
SFFL uses an integrated approach to address the different
challenges the fishery communities face. Activities are defined
to achieve results on education, health and socio-economic
issues, which together should lead to sustainable social and
economic living conditions. In their effort to succeed the
village organisations are supported and guided by staff of SFFL
and are offered to make use of the financial and training
facilities of the Federation. Furthermore, SFFL aims to
influence policies in different areas of development by
participating in platforms at divisional, district and national
level.
The federal structure of the organisation unites the members of
different communities on village, district and national level.
An individual membership can benefit from this, economically and
socially. By keeping members informed of issues which affect
their future needs and their welfare, they could make their
views known to the district body of SFFL or directly to the
national head office, which can develop a strong voice through
which to address government nationally, and other policy
authorities at a district, division or village level. |
