All ecological systems or ecosystems are constituted with biotic and abiotic components. Plants, animals and microbes such as bacteria and fungi comprise the biotic component while air, water, and soil form the abiotic component of an ecosystem. The interactions between these components result the functions of an ecosystem.

The plants that occur in a mangrove ecosystem are collectively known as mangroves and the animals as mangrove animals or fauna. The area covered by mangroves is termed the mangle.
