“Saving the world.... One island village at a time” “Seacology” is the world’s premier non-profit, non-governmental organization whose sole and unique purpose is to preserve the environments and cultures of islands throughout the globe from the Arctic Circle to the South Seas. Seacology launches projects to help preserve island ecosystems and cultures. Too often, islanders around the world are told that they should make financial sacrifices on behalf of the environment, and receive nothing in return. Seacology searches for situations that not only protect the local environment, but also provide the islanders tangible benefits in return. In our modern world, where nearly everything carries a price tag, it is easy to forget the human cost of environmental degradation. Indigenous peoples often are the first to be impacted by rainforest logging, destruction of fisheries and coral reefs. And because indigenous people are often both politically and economically impoverished, they are usually the least able to buffer themselves and their families from negative impacts, to seek legal redress, or to engage the political processes necessary to protect- their habitats, their cultures, and their future. In this Seacology mission, we are very happy to work with Small Fishers Federation in Sri Lanka.
